Blizzcon 2009

I’m nowhere near the Blizzcon convention…  And I’m not currently playing any Blizzard games…  But I’d have to be living under a very large rock to miss all the hype and hoopla going on.

Looks like Diablo III is going to have a Monk class.  I’m pretty excited about that.  I’ve always enjoyed monk-type characters in RPGs.  I like the idea of wading into combat with no weapons or armor, and laying waste to your foes none-the-less.

Looks like the monk will be armed with a staff, and maybe fist weapons as well…  Reminds me a bit of the Assassin class from Diablo II, which I simply loved.

There’s also talk of the next expansion to World of WarcraftCataclysm.

This time around it looks like they’re focusing on the old world instead of adding another new area.  There’s a couple new races – goblins and worgen – and tons of changes to the old world.  New zones, dramatic changes to old zones, phasing terrain, heroic versions of old dungeons…

Looks good enough, in fact, that we’re going to have to reserve a couple copies and re-subscribe to WoW.

Looks nifty…  But I’ve got no clue what it is actually about.

Happy Birthday H.P.!

Today would have been H.P. Lovecraft‘s 119th Birthday.

I’m going to have to read something squamous in his honor…

Pharyngula | Men, Women Divided Over Sex Bill

There is a bill pending in the Bahamas which would outlaw marital rape, and it is facing a lot of opposition.

This is just plain wrong.  They’re working on a new bill to outlaw marital rape, and people are opposing it?  And why do they need a new bill?  Isn’t rape illegal, regardless of context?

Apparently not…

“It is ridiculous for them to try to make that a law, because I don’t think a man can rape his own wife. After two people get married, the Bible says that they become one – one flesh. How is it possible to rape what is yours?”

“Even if a woman says no to her husband it still can’t be considered rape because she is his wife. He already paid his dues at the church and she already said ‘I do,’ so from then on, even if [a man] forces sex on his wife, it isn’t rape,”

“I disagree with the bill because I disagree that a man can rape his wife. The Bible tells me that a man’s body is his wife’s and her body is his. How could he rape her?”

These sick bastards think it is OK to rape a woman just because she agreed to marry you!

That because a bunch of dusty goatherders 2,000 years ago used to treat their women as nothing more than livestock, it doesn’t count as rape today.

Worse, these beliefs are apparently not limited to the Bahamas…  From the comments:

A shocking, but unfortunately common belief even in supposedly progressive states. For instance, marital rape was only outlawed in the UK in 1992 by the House of Lords in R v R.

As a law student I remember reading the transcript in disbelief both at the defence barrister’s arguments that marital rape was not possible as a result of the ‘one flesh’ theory (supported by four cases where the husband had been acquited on that basis), and that it was legal in a state which was a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights for a husband to rape his wife until only a few years ago.

Apologists will make plenty of excuses…  Claim that this isn’t widespread, or isn’t a problem somehow…  But this is just plain wrong.

There is something fundamentally wrong with anyone who would rape a woman…  Specifically their wife – someone they’ve promised to love, cherish, and care for…  And then claim they didn’t do anything wrong because of what some ancient book says.

These are some sick people.

Greta Christina’s Blog:  Healthcare Favor

I have a favor to ask you all. No, my health is fine. But a friend of mine just posted on her Facebook page that she got her earring ball stuck in her ear canal… and she wanted advice on how to get it out, since she couldn’t afford the emergency room fee.
