SPORE
Saw a commercial for SPORE on TV last night…
Seemed vaguely odd to see a game like that advertised on TV. I know there’s been talk of a version for the Wii or the DS, but as far as I know SPORE is going to be primarily a PC game. And PC games aren’t all that popular these days. Everyone prefers their consoles.
And SPORE isn’t the type of game that you typically see heavily promoted. Usually those are shooters of various kinds, or racing games, or sports titles. Not something relatively complex and non-violent like SPORE.
Then again, The SIMS was a pretty popular title… Saw a lot of press…
Anyway, the point I’m trying to slowly get around to is that I didn’t really care. I saw the commercial on TV and just didn’t respond to it. A year or two back I was dying to see SPORE released. I couldn’t wait. I was counting the days. I was trying to scrounge up enough money for a preorder. But ever since I played the demo of the Creature Creator I just haven’t been that excited.
I was annoyed at the arbitrary restrictions imposed on the Creature Creator. I was annoyed that they wanted you to pay money for what was essentially a useless and crippled demo for a product that you’d eventually also be paying money for. And the creatures that I was able to create just weren’t as amazing and cool as I thought they’d be.
Which is not to say that I won’t wind up giving SPORE a try… Hopefully they’ll have a demo available for download somewhere. Or maybe I’ll wait a couple months and then download a pirated copy somewhere. If it’s actually a good game I’ll be more than happy to pay for it, especially with the pseudo-multiplayer aspects… But right now I’m just not convinced that it is actually worth the money.
