MythBusters

MythBusters had a SuperHero Myths special last night…  And while it was very entertaining to watch them scaling buildings and punching skulls, I really have to wonder what exactly the myth was.

Is it a myth that the Phantom can punch someone hard enough to leave a ring mark in their skin?  Sure, it doesn’t work in the real world…but the Phantom is fiction.  It isn’t supposed to be real.

Is it a myth that Batman has a grappling hook type thing that can stick into any material at all?  Again, it doesn’t work in the real world…but Batman is fiction.

It really seems that MythBusters is straying from it’s roots busting myths.

requiem

Just stumbled (literally) across this site, and I am curious to say the least.

Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem

The trailer looks pretty decent…  Hopefully it’ll be better than the last Aliens vs. Predator movie they did.

My parents were originally planning on coming up for a visit after Labor Day, but all our plans have been derailed a bit.  So, instead of coming up after Labor Day, they are going to hang around for a few more days right now.

That means that while my mother is still up in Maine, my father is going to spend the next few days painting our house.  We picked a slightly unusual color…  Somewhere between a sage green and a light grey.  It looks great on another house we saw, but I’m not sure how it’ll look on our house.  I’m thinking it’ll look good…but we’ll see.

Unfortunately, I had already put in for vacation time for the week after Labor Day.  And right now I’m scheduled fairly tightly at work.  So it doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to get much time off to spend with my parents this week.

return trip

We spent today driving back home.  Again, eight or so hours in the car.  That’s really entirely too long for me to be cooped up in a car…

I’m exhausted after the last four days.  It’s all been a blur.  Far more activity and people that I’m used to.

I am not in any way ready to go back in to work tomorrow.  I feel like I could sleep for a day or two.

tourists

Today was spent basically being tourists.  We went around to all the old places we used to vacation in.  Went up Cadillac Mountain, walked along the seawall, had lunch in some harbor town, threw bread at the seagulls…

The weather was nice and warm all day, not at all what I associate with Maine.  I even got a little sunburnt.

funeral

Attended the funeral this morning…  The casket was open at the funeral home and I was shocked at how old my grandfather looked.  The last time I saw him was about five years ago, at our wedding…and the years have not been kind to him.  I’m not sure what an 89 year old should look like…but this just didn’t look like the man I’d known.

The service was nice, and the weather was pleasant at least for a while.  I got to see a number of relatives that I haven’t seen in many years…  Met some of them for the first time.

After the service we all went out to lunch, and then out to someone’s cabin.  Spent most of the day catching up, gossiping, finding out how people have been spending their lives.  The weather didn’t hold out for long though, and we had some impressive rain by the end of the day.

long day

I think that six-hour estimate was a bit on the conservative side.  Seems more like about eight hours now that we’re here.
