raaaawr!

So, obviously, I spent a good chunk of last night playing Overlord.

So far I am very impressed with the game. The installer warned me that my system does not meet the requirements, but allowed me to continue anyway. I’ve seen too many programs either refuse to install entirely if you don’t meet the requirements, or provide no warning at all – neither of which is terribly helpful. But, despite the fact that my machine really shouldn’t be running Overlord at all, it actually runs pretty well.

woot!

Terri just surprised the heck out of me…  She bought me Overlord!  I didn’t know the game was even out yet, and I didn’t think we could really afford it – I certainly didn’t expect to come home and find it waiting for me.  But, she somehow managed to save up the money and snuck off to Electronics Boutique to buy it for me today.  Very nice.

1408

We went to see Stephen King’s new movie, 1408, today.  It was surprisingly good.  I guess I’m not really sure what I expected…but it’s been so long since I saw a new Stephen King movie…and this one was rated PG-13…so I guess I had my doubts.

But it really was quite good.  Decent acting, decent special effects, good storyline, some good scares – thoroughly enjoyable.  One of the better horror movies I’ve seen in a while.

Overlord, redux

Grabbed the demo for Overlord yesterday…  Had to let it run most of the day while I was at work since it was over a gigabyte.

Overlord

Just as I was thinking that I really want a new game…  I see an advertisement for something called Overlord.  Looks something like Dungeon Master or Evil Genius…  I’ll have to see if I can find a demo somewhere, but I think it is probably safe to assume that my ancient PC will not run it well – if at all.

Pan’s Labyrinth

We watched Pan’s Labyrinth last night…and I did not enjoy it as much as I was expecting to.

It was a beautiful movie…  The fantasy sequences were terrifically executed…  Good acting, good effects, good storyline, interesting characters…  But I always felt very disconnected and remote from the on-screen events.  I suspect some of that had to do with the fact that I was relying on the subtitles to understand what was going on.

I suspect that the subtitles didn’t relay the correct tone for me to know whether someone was lying or not…or whether someone was being sarcastic…  I spent most of the movie wondering whether the things Ofelia was seeing were real or not…and whether Pan was to be trusted…  I suspect that, had the movie been in English, I might have had answers to those questions from the tone of voice used.

It was also not terribly clear to me who anyone was or what was going on.  It may have been explained at the very beginning of the movie…there was a block of text…but the subtitles flew by far too quickly for me to read it all…  It was not until this morning, when I looked up the movie on IMDB, that I understood who the soldiers and rebels were.  I spent a good part of the movie wondering who the soldiers were and why the rebels were fighting them.

It’s really a shame that I’m not fluent in Spanish…  I think I would have enjoyed the movie quite a bit more if I was.
