30 Days with Ubuntu Linux
From Slashdot:
“Vexed by Vista’s hardware requirements and product activation issues, many have claimed on various boards that they plan to “switch to Linux.” [H] Consumer spent 30 days using nothing but Ubuntu Linux to find out if this is truly a viable alternative for the consumer. Linux has indeed become much more than the “Programmer’s OS.” “
It’s always interesting to see how people react when they spend some real time with Linux…
Interestingly enough, from my own experience I’d recommend Linux soonest to those who use their computers the least. Your average home user with little computer experience…who only uses their computer for email and web browsing, maybe the occasional game of solitaire…will do just fine with something like Ubuntu. It does everything they need it to. Yeah, there’ll be some confusion getting used to the new GUI…but it’s really just learning a new button to click to get email.
Hardcore geeks can get along with Linux just fine as well, because they’re willing and able to make their software work or find suitable replacements.
The folks who really run into trouble with the various Linux desktops are the power users and gamers… The folks who know more than a little bit about the computers they use, but aren’t real computer geeks. They’re going to run into the most trouble as the software and commands they know suddenly work differently or not at all.
